Wonderland

Let It Snow, Let It Snow!!

Each year, as part of the Christmas Parade of Lights sponsored by the Santa Maria and Nipomo Rotary Clubs, the Rotary Club of Santa Maria South organizes a “Winter Wonderland” snow experience for children 2-8 years old. Many children get their first taste of “snow” at the annual Winter Wonderland event.

This year, the event takes place Saturday, December 3rd BEFORE the parade, from 1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m., allowing more younger children to participate. Another change in the event this year is its location – the 2011 Winter Wonderland will take place at the entrance to the Abel Maldonado Youth Center. Rotary Santa Maria South is partnering with City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department to celebrate the Center’s Tenth Anniversary with a Winter Wonderland extravaganza entitled Winterfest.

Henri Ardantz of Bonipak generously provides the artificial snow, Carl and Bob Engel (Engel and Gray) deliver the “snow” in a semi-truck, and Will Collier helps pack the snow into a large hill for sliding. Kids are invited to don jackets and mittens and mount one of the snow dishes provided for a free slide down, simulating all the fun of a trip to the mountains. Santa Maria South Rotarians and volunteers help the kids climb the hill and get set into a dish for a speedy slide. Free candy canes are given for every successful slide, so remind the kids to wear sturdy shoes to climb the hill (no flip flops!) and gloves to keep the hands warm.

And this year, the kids can enjoy not only some extra activities being planned at the Winter Wonderland site, but also a Winterfest Open House at the
